Adam SIlvera’s They Both Die at the end is getting an onscreen portrayal.

Three years after its publication, Entertainment One (eOne) has purchased rights to Adam Silvera’s They Both Die At The End, and the beloved YA novel is officially in the works as a television series.

Bridgerton screenwriter and creator Chris Van Dusen has been confirmed to co-write and executive produce this T.V. series alongside Adam Silvera and confirmed producer Drew Comins. They Both Die At The End’s popularity skyrocketed during the pandemic and then again after going viral with TikTok’s infamous hashtag #BookTok.

This New York Times Bestseller was previously greenlit for an HBO max series,  but once eOne began pursuing the rights to the Silvera novel, it landed them in a competitive situation. As of now, eOne holds current possession of rights to They Both Die At The End while HBO holds rights to another popular Silvera novel, More Happy Than Not.

In my opinion, this show could either be a huge success or it could go down as one of the worst book-to-movie adaptations ever portrayed on screen. They Both Die At The End is one of the most well-known LGBTQ+ books written by Silvera and any attempt at a screen portrayal will lead to many reviews, which will undoubtedly be both good and bad. However, what will make or break the show is its fidelity to the books. All we currently know is it will be a series, so I’m curious to see how the entirety of the show will take place in the single day covered in the novel.

Unfortunately the YA literature space is no stranger to bad adaptations.  Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief (2010) is one example of a book-to-movie adaptation that received huge backlash because they didn’t follow the books or stay consistent to the original story. When it was announced that Disney+ would develop and release a new show adaptation of the series while working closely with the author Rick Riordan, fans rejoiced to potentially receive a more accurate on-screen portrayal of the books.

If Adam Silvera is working closely with eOne, then there’s no doubt in my mind that this book adaptation will be a success.
