Clubs/Extracurriculars

Extracurriculars, no doubt, are essential for both being a well-rounded individual and having something to focus on other than academics. They are a huge criteria for college applications. That being said, it is integral that the clubs you choose to join are ones you are actually interested in and are willing to commit to. Clubs are meant to be enriching, not burdening. Don’t join a club simply because your friends are doing it. These are made to bring people with similar interests together; you can use clubs to make new friends even if your existing ones aren’t in it.

During the first week of school, there is a club blitz which allows you to see what all the different clubs are and what they do. During this time, it is a good idea to make a list of the top 5 clubs you are interested in. Later, you can narrow them down using this document. It’s important not to join too many clubs, especially in freshman year, unless you know how to balance it out efficiently in your schedule. Two or three is a good number, otherwise, you run the risk of being burnt out or being overcommitted.

It’s pretty easy to become part of the community at South. Don’t stress yourself out with clubs and just enjoy yourself. For instance, I take Drama Club and it allows me to be myself and connect with my friends.
