SFHS Boys’ Lacrosse Team Gives Back to the Community
November 17, 2020
In the spirit of the Holiday Season, South Forsyth High School’s Boys Lacrosse Team is hosting a Toy Drive for the Children’s Hospital of Atlanta (CHOA). The team is collecting donations until November 20th with donation boxes located in the main hall office and Coach Hurlbut’s room (room 369). Possible donations include books, action figures, board games, dolls, legos, and more. All these items must be new and cannot contain latex. Youth transportation such as bikes and scooters, oversized items including craft kits and playsets, as well as all forms of glitter will not be accepted.
During this season of thanks, the SFHS Lacrosse Team is very grateful for all the doctors and staff at CHOA who have helped individuals within the team. Recently, senior lacrosse player Gavin Rodrigue had major surgery at CHOA. Rodrigue experienced exceptional care from the amazing team of doctors, nurses, and other healthcare professionals. Gavin’s time at CHOA spurred an idea of giving back to the patients at the hospital.
We interviewed the SFHS Boys’ Lacrosse coach, Coach Hurlbut, to learn more about their goals for the Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta Toy Drive.
“Gavin also saw the many boys and girls at CHOA that were less fortunate than himself,” said Coach Hurlbut. “He wanted to find a way to help those children that CHOA treats in their facilities and thought this would be a great way to do this.”
Coach Hurlbut discussed the many benefits of hosting a toy drive for the patients at CHOA. Specifically, he hopes that the toys serve as a source of joy for these children during this holiday season. The SFHS Lacrosse team partnered with other Lacrosse Programs in the Forsyth County school system such as West Forsyth, North Forsyth, Denmark, and more. Furthermore, several honor societies at South have spread the message to their members and are allowing their members to earn service hours from donating to the toy drive. Many students have already donated a variety of exciting toys, family-fun board games, and engaging children’s books.
The Lacrosse team is grateful for all the donations they have collected so far. The deadline to receive donations is next Friday before Thanksgiving break, so there’s still time to donate to this amazing fundraiser.
“Our Boys Lacrosse team is extremely grateful for all that CHOA has done for our community and we are more than happy to support them and give back,” concluded Coach Hurlbut.
